Review- Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Season 1

If you're a fan of oddball comedies and shows that are just off the wall in a knowing way (not Big Bang Theory), then you'll have likely come across the excellent 30 Rock. It was a show about people putting on a show at the NBC studio's in New York and it was wonderful. Written by and starring Tina Fey, the show was meta, wacky and strangely sincere at points and I'd highly recommend watching it if you ever have the chance. But now, we have a show that looks ready to follow in it's clown shoe sized foot steps: Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is Netflix's newest comedy show and it's already looking great. It stars Ellie Kemper as Kimmy, a woman who has been locked up in a bunker for the last fifteen of her life when she is all of a sudden released into New York. She takes the logical step and goes to live in a basement with a gay black man named Titus Andromedon. But money is short so she takes a job as the helper and cleaner of Mrs Voorhes, an upper class New Yorker with a daughter called Xanthippe. As you may have gathered, the show is pretty odd, although when you see the characters in action, you can see that they're essentially walking stereotypes of various types of people. It's cleverness, disguised as a childlike woman running round New York with a homosexual black guy.

In a show like this, humour is everything. If the humour isn't there, the entire show will fall flat. Fortunately, this show is bouncier than a bouncy castle powered by E numbers. Most of the humour (at least in the first few episodes) comes from a mix of the fish out of water element and the piss taking of both New York's upper and lower classes. But it soon descends into 30 Rock territory with a bit of meta humour but also a lot of humour that comes from the silly. For example, there is an episode where Titus has classes on how to act straight from  Dean Norris (Hank from Breaking Bad). It starts odd and ends ridiculous. Some of the clashes between Kimmy and Xanthippe are also funny.

But one of the things that I think is most surprising about this show is it's heart. For a show that prides itself on it's zaniness, it has a lot of sincerity. For example, each episode will try and make a point about our lives and basically how fortunate we are to have what we have. It feels preachy when I say it like that but it touches you kind of deep. Plus, we get a flashback to the bunker with these messages so hey, that's great too.

30 Rock may be gone now but the good news is that we have this, a show that looks to fill the shoes Tina Fey left by being made by Tina Fey. All the episodes are up right now and a second season has already been announced. I will watch that as soon as it comes out because this show deserves to be watched for it's strangeness, it's charm and it's wonderful humour. You have to watch this show because I give it
