Review- Better Call Saul

Let's not lie, if you watched Breaking Bad, you're probably still trying to fill the hole it left. There was just something about it that is so unique. Whether you think it's one of the best shows ever made or not, it was unlike anything we've ever seen or may ever see again. That's where Better Call Saul comes in.

As you could well have guessed by now, Better Call Saul is the story of Saul Goodman, the criminal lawyer we all loved so dearly from Breaking Bad. But there's a twist; Saul is not Saul yet. When we meet Saul, he's Jimmy McGill, a wannabe lawyer just trying to get along. He has an eccentric brother, meets Mike (also from Breaking Bad) working at a car park but he hasn't got it together. This is his story. I don't really want to spoil much of the story so I'll keep this fairly brief but basically, it's the first part of his rise to power. And it's just as entertaining as Walter White's rise.

Unsurprisingly, the acting in BCS is top notch. Bob Odenkirk is at his best as the scumbag/dude of a lawyer, Saul Goodman (but at this point, he's Jimmy McGill so I'm calling him that). We see all sorts of ranges on the emotional scale and at each and every one of them, you care about Jimmy. He's not yet a scumbag and as such, we still love him. Also good is Jonathan Banks as Mike. For most of the episodes he's just gruff and lovable but episode 6 is the Mike show and that's where Banks shines. We also have Michael Mando pop up for a bit as a goon. He's pretty good but I just like him because he's always going to look and sound exactly like Vaas from Far Cry 3 and no other character. Trevor from GTA V also turns up. It's an odd supporting cast but they are all excellent in their roles and enhance the show in their own ways.

The cinematography and music of BCS is easily one of the highlights, as it was back in Breaking Bad. Everything looks beautiful. It's atmospheric and constantly perfect with it's look. If you were a big fan of the look of BB, you will be delighted with every scene of BCS. But also, it's actually bright and colourful. While BB was always at least slightly gritty both thematically and visually but BCS is bright and beautiful. Even the night scenes have a certain gloss to them that is lovely. And as far as music goes, it's even better than BB. We have only seen one season so far but the score is spot on, we get a little bit of Smoke on the Water at one point and the theme tune is already one of my favourites ever. It's brief but perfect. I just wish we got more.

What more can I say about how great Better Call Saul is? If you liked Breaking Bad at all, you'll find something to love in here. It's perfectly acted, perfectly shot and perfectly written. It's not quite perfect of course. We haven't got the whole story yet and it could be slow in places. But as a first season, this is damn incredible. If you have Netflix, watch it. If you don't have Netflix, dude, why not? Get the free trial, watch it and then carry on with your life. Better Call Saul is a great new series and I will happily give it a
