Opinion Piece - Can I Offer You On Cinema in This Trying Time?

Image
We've all still got lots of free time on our hands and so you, like me, are probably looking for your next great thing to binge. I hear DEVS and Normal People  are both great, I'm planning on checking them out soon, but I thought I'd give you all a much more obscure recommendation. It won't be to everyone's taste but for those who dig it, I think you're truly going to dig it. It's On Cinema, at The Cinema . It's these two personalities rubbing up against each other, bringing the very worst out of each other and the very best of cringe comedy to the world of film criticism. What is On Cinema , is probably your first question. Well, Brianna Ziggler recently wrote a really good article about the show which can fill you in on much more detail, but in a nutshell, it's kind of a parody of movie review shows by clueless dudes. Our main host is Tim Heidecker, playing an exaggerated version of himself. You might recognise him from a small role in U

Review - Gooby

Image
Gooby is like a nightmare I once had. I don't really know how else to preface this, it's a nightmare. First, why am I reviewing Gooby ? Well, there are two reasons. First, it was highlighted by this great video by YouTuber Drew Gooden, where the question of "am I sure they didn't make this up?" was raised in my mind almost every single minute. I also had some dear, dear friends of mine watch it together at the start of this madness and their delightful shitposting since then has inspired me to investigate the source of their insanity. Investigate I did, and I'm wishing I hadn't. Gooby  is the story of a boy who moves house and is followed by his childhood teddy bear, only he's massive and has a Scottish accent. Hijinks ensue! It's about learning to love yourself and feel comfortable in a new setting. In terms of setup, it's like the worst of E.T. meets the worst of Drop Dead Fred ! Nothing seems to happen for 90 minutes, and then it ends a

Top 7 - My Favourite Things From 1 Month in Quarantine

Image
Well, roughly speaking, we're about 1 month into the COVID-19 quarantine as you read this. I hope you're well. This is a strange time and we can all only do our best, which is generally stay put, leave the house as little as possible and try not to go insane. That's harder than it sounds, I know, and while I gave you all a list of films you should check out during the quarantine , you might want to know what's been keeping me sane. Fortunately for you, that's the exact premise of this post! Below, I have a list of some of the albums, TV shows and video games that I've been enjoying this month, either for the first time or maybe they're familiar things that I've returned to who have proved incredibly comforting. Films have been left out, because I have a Letterboxd account if you want to know more specifically what I'm checking out (recent highlights have included Waves , Videodrome and the Jump Street  films) and also because films are so often the f

Review - The Platform

Image
The Platform  is one of the newest films out on Netflix and if the newly added Top 10 feature is anything to go by, a few of you may have already seen it. It's been on there since it came out, it's been getting good reviews, a bunch of people you know have probably told you to watch it once you finish Tiger King . Anyway, it's been pretty popular so I checked it out! One of the bits of credit you can immediately give the film is that it has an awesome premise. We follow a character in a vertical prison, where inmates are randomly allocated a new floor each month. We're not told how many floors there are but there's a hole in the middle of each floor that goes down to the bottom. From this hole descends... The Platform! This platform contains a bunch of food and prisoners are allowed to eat anything that remains after the people above them have feasted. On floor 1, you can feast. Floor 30, you're still in luck. Going down further, maybe to somewhere like 80 a
