Belated Double Review Spectacular- 10 Cloverfield Lane and Midnight Special

Image
Today, I present the films that I saw, didn't have time to fit into my schedule and you can't really see in cinemas now but I want to talk about anyway. It's a claustrophobic thriller vs a slow burn mystery but either way, you're going to be hooked. First, 10 Cloverfield Lane. 10 Cloverfield Lane 10 Cloverfield Lane is the story of a woman who is running from her problems and ends up unconscious on the side of the road. When she wakes up she finds herself in a bunker. Her captor tells her she can't leave because there's been an attack but he saved her. Everyone outside is apparently dead, the only person alive other than the lead and her captor is another man who is seemingly trusting of the captor. From there, it becomes a film that is all about the relationship between the three characters and trying to work out who is telling the truth about what. It's a story that unravels slowly but will keep you on edge for the whole time, but I'll get to th

Top 7- Films that are going to get me through my exams

Exam season is coming unnervingly close and I'm slowly dissapearing into a shelter to revise. During that time, I would like to stay sane and will do so by watching films. Lots of films, whenever I have time. I want to make that time special and therefore, I will choose films that will get me through my exams. Criteria: they must either be out in cinemas in this time, have good messages about the world and all that or just be so funny and joyous that they distract me from the crippling pain revision puts on me. I'm not ranking them based on how good they are, more on how much they'll help me in whatever way it is. 7. American Beauty This may not seem like a good choice at first glance but look closer. Not only is the film a cinematic masterpiece that I could sit and appreciate for hours on end, it's also a testament to the beauty of life. I know it's a film that oozes cynicism, features adultery and ends in death but that isn't the point. The point is, a

Opinion Piece- I'm finally going to talk about House of Cards Season 4 because it's been long enough

Image
As I write this, I'm still trying to conceal spoilers from those around me as to the fates of Frank, Claire, Doug and the rest of the most lovably despicable humans ever to enter politics. But as you read this, Season 4 of House of Cards will have been out for over a month so I feel like everyone has had enough time to watch it. If you're behind on any of House of Cards, I highly recommend that you go away and watch all of it, preferably in as few sessions as possible. There will be  MAJOR SPOILERS for all of the show so far, right up to the last shot of season 4. So has everyone gone who wants to? Good. Then lets get twisted. I'll go through the important events chronologically. First, what the hell was the first scene? That was one hell of a cold open with an erotic story and a prisoner jacking off to it. Very weird. On that note, the real point I wanted to make in this was how effective the assassination attempt on Frank's life. It came from pretty much nowhere, ev

Top 7- Best Long Takes

Image
Let's get real nerdy here. I love films so much that I even have a favourite technique: the long take/follow shot. For those who are unaware, a long take is one continous, uninterrupted take that often follow the characters through some sort of event. They can cut in the middle but the trick is making it look like the camera never stops rolling. With that in mind, let's begin.  7. Gravity- The first space walk There may have been less choices here than I originally thought so I've been somewhat stuck with this entry which, to be fair, is pretty much the highlight of it's film. As you may have just guessed there, I wasn't such a huge fan of Gravity but you've got to respect this opener. It uses the take to build suspense. After all, you're not expecting this film to go well are you? It uses that knowledge and builds the tension, as well as building up character. If I'd enjoyed Gravity more, this would probably be higher up but it's an above av
