Review- Kingsman: The Secret Service

Image
Have you seen Kingsman: The Secret Service yet? You haven't? Shame on  you! Why, what did you watch instead? Fifty Shades of Grey?!? COME ON!!! I can say with entire confidence that Kingsman is this year's first must-see film. If you went to see American Sniper or Fifty Shades of Grey instead, I don't think we can ever be friends again. This film is one of the coolest, most badass and just plain stylish films in years. But, what is Kingsman: The Secret Service? Well, it's a film directed by Matthew Vaughn (The man who brought you Kick-Ass) and based off a graphic novel by Mark Millar (The man who brought you the Kick-Ass graphic novel). And it shows. This film does to the spy genre what Kick-Ass did to the superhero genre. It copies it, studies it and then becomes one of the best examples in it's genre. Kingsman is the story of Eggsy, a boy who's grown up in a tough area of London who suddenly gets recruited to join the gentlemen spy service known as Kingsma

Razzies 2015- Razzie Winner Predictions

So the Oscars are very soon but no one cares about those. Those last few blog posts have been filler until the real star of the awards circuit, The Razzies. For those who don't know, they're like the Oscars but for celebrating true piles of shit. It's the only awards where Michael Bay, Adam Sandler and anything Tyler Perry does are the favourites. So buckle up, because we're heading on a ride not dissimilar to the rapids but if the rapids was a sewer system under a curry house. Razzie Redeemer Award- Ben Affleck for Gone Girl Let's start with a healthy dose of positivity. This award recognizes people who have won Razzies before but have had a comeback and done some excellent work. For my money, Ben Affleck fits this category perfectly. After watching Gone Girl, you will forget (or at least want to forget) his previous mistakes. And boy, those were mistakes. Still, forget Daredevil and whatever Gigli was. Ben Affleck has truly redeemed himself. People may say tha

Oscars 2015- Oscar Winner Predictions

Welcome to the star studded conclusion of the Oscar coverage here on The Quite Nerdy Blog. Time to round up all the important(ish) categories and get putting in those final predictions. Now, let's get ready to get into the mindset of a bunch of old, white, American dudes and predict us some Academy Awards! Best Animated Film- How to Train Your Dragon 2 Okay, so I haven't seen any of the films on this list. Basically, I was expecting The Lego Movie to just sweep this whole category. So, time for a random guess. How to Train Your Dragons 2 recently won best animated picture at an awards ceremony just for animated films so I guess it's pretty good. I've heard comparisons to The Empire Strikes Back and other similar, great sequels. My brother seems to like this series so I guess this film deserves the award. But given the shock over The Lego Movie, this category could go either way yet. Best Visual Effects- Dawn of the Planet of the Apes This one is a clear win. 2

Re-Review- Fight Club

Image
In honour of Valentines day, I've decided to spend some time with my true love: David Fincher's Fight Club. In short, every Valentines day, there will be no review of a love film or something sloppy like that. No, you will get a review of a film that I adore with passion. Therefore it only seemed sensible to start with my (current) favourite film of all time. Buckle up, make some soap and most importantly, don't talk about Fight Club. So, what happens in Fight Club? What is it about? Why can't we talk about it? Well, this is a film that is truly best enjoyed when going in blind so I'll give you the very basics. The Narrator of our twisted tale (played by Edward Norton) is an insomniac who finds solace in visiting support groups. His life is ending one minute at a time and he's powerless to stop it. That is, until he meets the enigmatic Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) a soap salesman who works as a waiter and projectionist as a side project. After a tragic event befa

Top 7- Best Romantic Films

Image
What's that emerging out of the desert of Oscar talk? Why, it looks to be the oasis of a Top 7 just in time for Valentines Day. Being a complete romantic and purveyor of romantic films, I feel very well equipped to talk about the best romantic films out there. But before you read the list and feel enraged that I've missed something like The Notebook or Love Actually, this is a list of the best romantic films, not the most romantic films. If we're caving into commercialism, we do this my way. 7. Donnie Darko Immediately, some of you will see a problem here. Donnie Darko isn't exactly a romantic film. In fact, one may even say it's a sci-fi mystery type thing that's become a huge cult success. But it has got a romantic sub-plot and one that's quite touching and honest. Donnie is given this mysterious prophecy about the world ending in 28 days and as such, he lives these days to the full. This includes asking out this mysterious girl named Gretchin. We ge

Oscars 2015 Review- American Sniper

Image
This week was meant to be Whiplash but it doesn't appear to be on anyway right now and my cinema of choice is currently under new management. What this all means is that I'm out of my comfort zone with both the cinema and film. I had no desire to see American Sniper until Whiplash fell out of the running and this was the only other accompaniment to Kingsman: The Secret Service (review of that in a few weeks). So, knuckle down for... Well, Bradley Cooper shooting dudes in the face for an hour or two. American Sniper is the film based on a book based on a true story about the most successful sniper in American military history. It's directed by Clint Eastwood, stars beefy hunk Bradley Cooper and has been five time nominated at this year's Oscars. Does it deserve all those nominations? No. It doesn't. The film is two hours long for a start but it feels like a film twice that length. I've nothing against films that are dark or films that are long but please don
