A Fairly Topical Matter- E3 2018 Conference Round-up

Image
I may not play as many new video games as I used to but there's still something that draws me back to E3. It used to be the excitement but year after year, that fades and I'm left with pure cynicism. Still, angry cynicism can be fun to read so enjoy me breaking down seven conferences over four days, followed by me breaking down and going back to my mini SNES. Saturday: EA First up was EA, the people's punching bag and after massive controversy with Star Wars Battlefront 2, this was the time for them to bounce back! Except they didn't. They were a deflated ball that collapsed as soon as it hit the ground. It was a poor start when we start with a lot of chat from the host who seems nice enough but is clearly being used as a corporate mouthpiece. Anyway, she gets off stage and we see Battlefield 5, by which I mean we don't actually see much of it, we're just told stuff. Obviously, there's the biggest buzzword of the show with "no lootboxes"...

A fairly topical matter- E3 Conference rundown

Image
For the uninitiated, E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) is the biggest gaming conference of the year and is where games are announced or more likely, games that have been leaked or delayed get new footage shown. The highlight is the conferences and this year, they take place over two days. Unfortunately, the conferences are usually in the middle of the night but this year, I'm staying up for all of them feeling a bit ill and getting round to them late and running through them and discussing my thoughts on what was shown and how in order of release, starting with the EA conference from the 12th and ending with Sony on the early hours of the 14th. I'm going through all the conferences as the games were shown and being my usual cynical self. I'm sure this can only go well. The EA Conference I didn't have my hopes up here because EA are shits and my expectations were met. For a start, they decided to do two conferences, one from LA and one from London but that slowe...

A fairly topical matter- The 2014 Quite Nerdy Awards

Image
Seeing as Christmas is this week (I know, how exciting!) and we're yet to get sick of it, this week is brought to you by ridiculous and incredibly impractical ideas. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you "I wish it could be Christmas everyday". Although if you watched the Black Mirror Christmas special, you won't enjoy it anymore. I guarantee it. The end of year is nigh and school is out (for now). And what a year it's been. We've twerked, tweeted and tempted the end of humanity with the Harlem Shake but we've also had some incredible TV, Films and Video Games turn up and blow our minds. This list is not comprehensive, it's just my opinions about things I saw/played this year. Also, this list has some negative awards dotted around like turd sprinkles on a chocolate cake. Or sultanas in a Christmas cake, seeing as it is the season to be jolly. TV Sherlock- Biggest tease (Stephen Moffat) Starting with one of the first shows to come out this year and i...

A very topical matter- Hateful Eight casting

Image
Newsflash! Quentin Tarantino has announced the main cast for his new film, The Hateful Eight. I'm pretty damn excited for it and the casting has made me even more excited. The full report is here (http://www.theverge.com/2014/11/6/7170107/hateful-eight-cast-announced-quentin-tarantino-western) but stick around and I'll give you a brief rundown. The cast is made up of a mixture of previous Tarantino collaborators and some newbies ready to be shot up in style. We obviously have Samuel "Bad-ass" Jackson (Pulp Fiction, Django Unchained e.t.c), the most frequent Tarantino collaborator starring alongside occasional collaborators Micheal Madsen (Kill Bill, Reservoir Dogs) and Tim Roth (Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction). There's some relative unknowns but then we have Channing Tatum, a man whose most famous role is a stripper. Having said this, I trust Tarantino and Tatum isn't an awful actor so fingers crossed. All over, this looks promising. A brilliant director ...

A fairly topical matter- 2014 ain't over yet

Image
We are now in the autumn. So many people have written the year off already. You fools. We still have much to come this year in the world of entertainment. So here's me, telling you what's still to come and what you should be watching out for. Also, if I haven't mentioned something it's going to be because it either doesn't interest me, there wasn't enough room or I simply forgot it. So don't hate in the comments. Movies Gone Girl This film only really appeared on my radar recently but became a must see instantly for the fact that it was an adaptation of a  brilliant book (I'm told, but I'm to read it soon) and it's a David Fincher film. David Fincher is my one of my favourite directors and one who has proved he can do thrillers. Or any other genre for that matter, but thriller is a specialty. If the quality of the trailer is anything to go by, this will be a film that once the intensity begins, it will build and build and build until the ...

A fairly topical matter- Peter Capaldi as the 12th Doctor

Image
A new series of Doctor Who is always a big event in the nerd world. But a new series with a new Doctor: we're talking major stuff now. So what was he like? How does he compare? Is he really too old? Hush, hypothetical reader. I'm going to talk about my opinions on Peter Capaldi as the 12th Doctor in this very post. Who could have seen that one coming? Also, this isn't an episode review. Although I will do a review of the whole series at the end. But this is a pressing matter. I'm going to take you back to a bit over a year ago. There was a big televised announcement where the 12th Doctor would be announced in a fashion only TV really does. And so, the big moment arrives. "And the 12th Doctor is..." at which point Malcolm Tucker from The Thick of It walks on. Many were confused, some were angry, some had conflicting emotions. At which point, we flash forward to Friday 22nd of August. The series premiere is tomorrow. People are anxious. There are multiple is...
