Review- Captain America: Civil War

DC, pay attention. This is how you make a VS movie.

For anyone who has been living under a particularly strong vibranium rock, Captain America: Civil War is the start of Phase 3 in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For reasons I won't spoil but are fairly obvious, Captain America and Iron Man get pitted against each other and fight, first with words and threats and eventually with fists and hand blasters. As far as story goes, it doesn't either create as many as implications for the world of Marvel nor twist as much as Winter Soldier but that's because Winter Soldier was an espoinage movie wheras Civil War is straight up action with hints of spy drama. I still loved the story though. The present twists and turns of plot were interesting and I loved the way that said twists worked to change the characters and how they interacted with each other. In all honesty though, the story isn't here to set the world on fire so if you're looking for that, why are you watching this film?

For most superhero movies, talking about acting would be pretty much pointless but the Captain America films set in modern times are really good showcases for the acting ability of the very talented cast. Chris Evans as Captain America has to be talked about as the star of the film and he's great. His buddies Bucky Barnes and Falcon are both great and are able to adapt to either comedy or emotion when needed. I imagine many people are excited to see more Iron Man and indeed, Robert Downey Jr. is as great as ever. His Tony Stark is a lot more somber than before with the events of Age of Ultron weighing heavily on his conscience but that new Stark makes for a fascinating adversary. Everyone else on the cast does a great job and Paul Rudd further proves that he is the perfect choice for Ant-Man.

One thing you have to remember about this film is that it is a key cog in the machine of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and that does mean it is very safe. Of course, there are plus sides. I loved the introductions of the new characters. Black Panther was fascinating and the little we see of him is enough to get me very excited for his standalone movie. Equally, Spiderman, although not strictly new, feels refreshed and exciting after the comparatively stale Sony efforts. I haven't read any Spiderman comics but I loved him as a character unlike in any entries ever before and am incredibly excited for Spiderman: Homecoming next year. Essentially, it works to set up the future and really does do that well but because it has to look after the future events, it means that, like I said, it all feels safe.

In the case of Civil War though, safe isn't entirely a bad thing. Sure, it lacks that grime and freshness that makes a movie incredible but it is a highly polished piece of work. In every scene, you can feel the effort that has gone in to the smallest details be it the actor who had to work out extra hard, the set dresser who placed an easter egg or the team of guys who made that explosion so pretty. After the tremendous work in Winter Soldier, everyone was expecting some really good fight scenes and we have certainly not been let down. You may have heard whispering of the airport fight scene and I won't spoil it, other than to say that it is one of the best fight scenes of the decade, a decade in which we got the church fight from Kingsman and both The Raid films. The action is great and you're going to love it.

So yeah, Civil War is good and I can't imagine you're surprised. The action is great, the characters are exciting and the story is interesting. You will definitely enjoy it more than Batman V Superman, even if you enjoyed it like I did. If there's one thing that Civil War has taught us, it's that Marvel movies will continue to be great for a good few years now, because Civil War is a fantastic film that clearly deserves a
