Review- Deadpool

This was my most anticipated film of the year. So has it lived up to the hype or has it flopped as hard as Green Lantern? Spoilers, it's not the second one.

In case you didn't know, Deadpool is the story of Wade Wilson, an ex soldier who falls in love. Unfortunately, terminal cancer gets in the way of that and when searching for a cure, gets turned into a mutant with healing powers. The people there mess him up pretty bad so he seeks revenge and tries to find his girlfriend, while kicking ass and breaking the fourth wall to pieces. It's pretty typical origin story stuff but it deals with it with such a sense of self-awareness that it actually feels kind of fresh. There also isn't much story there which means that I can't ruin it, but does mean that if you're looking for story, you will be disappointed. My advice? Don't watch this for the story.

What surprised me was how good all the acting is in this film. Admittedly, they're not Oscar performances but for a superhero film, and a stupid one at that, they're pretty decent. T.J. Miller may be pitched as simple comic relief but he's sometimes complex comic relief. Sire, he doesn't do much more than make us laugh but he doesn't need to. He makes us laugh well. We also have Morena Baccarin as Wade's girlfriend in a surprisingly deep role. This is a love story after all and without a decent love interest, what good is it? It also doesn't hurt that she's very hot. Mild spoiler here, Stan Lee has possibly the best cameo he's ever had in a Marvel film. I was in absolute hysterics at that bit. Standout role though is obviously Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool. He got a bad shot at it in X-Men Origins but this is a role he loves and that is clear. Each and every punchline, quip and cheeky look into the camera feels alive with personality. With a cocky superhero like Deadpool, the film lives and dies on the main character's likability. Fortunately, Deadpool has regenerative abilities so it's pretty much indestructible as a film.

The single most important aspect of Deadpool though is it's humour. Fans of the comics know that he is famous for being crass, referencing pop culture and just generally being self aware as a comic. Thankfully, the movie is no different. I'm pleased to say that with most scenes, there is wonderful humour that most comedies wish they could replicate. Having said that, there are some scenes where you won't necessarily be laughing the whole time and instead, these scenes offer either action or genuine emotion. When you're not laughing, you'll be gripped. When you're not gripped, you'll be laughing. It's a very entertaining film the whole way through and it makes for an incredible lampoon of the ever stagnating Superhero genre.

If you're going into Deadpool expected standard Superhero fare, you will be dissapointed because this film is not standard. It has a twisted sense of humour, great action scenes and enough character to warrant a franchise. Take note 20th Century Fox. Not only is this film doing great at the box office but fans are loving it and we want more. Bring on Deadpool 2, especailly if it gets a similar treatment to 22 Jump Street. I loved this film and while I may have over-hyped it somewhat, it's still great and I give it a
