Top 7- Most anticipated films of 2016

This year is now basically over, what with Christmas and Star Wars both gone so it's time to get ready for the most exciting movies of next year. As you can see, it's a year that is going to be dominated more than ever by Superhero films but there are some good, non-superhero movies as well. The real question is, will anything be able to top last year's spectacular batch, headlined by Whiplash? Only time will tell.

7. Batman VS Superman

With every trailer released, everyone gets both more excited and more worried about this movie. The reason it isn't any higher is because, while I definitely want to go see this and how it turns out, it could still be awful but that's what makes it so exciting. This is the kind of movie that we can go into and it could be one of this year's best or one of the most disappointing. Sure, I'm pretty excited to see Ben Affleck as Batman and it's essentially a film adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns, one of the greatest comics ever written, but it looks like a really cramped film. We have Batman, Superman, Lex Luthor, Wonder Woman, Doomsday, Aquaman, maybe The Flash and some more we haven't been told about. So will this movie be good? Who knows but I'm certainly excited to see the final result.

6. Captain America: Civil War

A much more reliable looking movie than Batman VS Superman, Captain America: Civil War's safety certainly doesn't make it boring. When the film was first announced, I got worried that with all the characters in it, we'd be getting Avengers 2.5 and a very crowded movie. That first trailer won me over immediately though. By the look of it, we're getting a much more personal story about Steve Rogers and Bucky and a similar vein of action to the stellar Winter Soldier. The film is also directed by the Russo Brothers, the same team behind Winter Soldier so I'm pretty much already won over. I know I'll see this film and I know it'll be good. It just has some very big shoes to fill.

5. La La Land

So little is known about this movie at the moment. We have a few set shots, a cast (Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, JK Simmons) and a director in Damien Chazelle. For those unaware, Damien Chazelle is the mastermind director behind Whiplash, one of my favourite films ever made. That alone is enough to have me very excited about the movie. Unfortunately, with no poster, no trailer and a vague synopsis, this movie can't really make it higher due to the total mystery it is. Sounds cool though.

4. The Revenant

As well as being a gothic concept, The Revenant is shaping up to be an incredibly exciting movie. Directed by Alejandro Inarritu, the director of Birdman, this movie has been an infamous nightmare for filming. Awful conditions, totally natural use of lighting and a constant strive for perfectionism have already given this movie a large reputation. Thing is, that doesn't bother me because what is in here looks superb. Leonardo DiCaprio is left for dead by Tom Hardy and tries to seek vengeance. The following story promises to be harsh, brutal but shot with skill and an eye for beauty that few can ever dream of. As someone who really enjoyed Birdman, seeing a totally different kind of film from the same man sounds fantastic.

3. Suicide Squad

Finally, a really risky move from DC. After  just putting their two most famous superheroes in a versus movie, it looks like they're prepared to try something that, before the movie announcement, I had never heard of. The Suicide Squad are... I want to say anti-heroes but they're just villains really. Anyway, they're a group of villains in prison who perform tasks for the government to shorten their sentences. Most of their members are fairly unknown but the two most famous are Harley Quinn and The Joker. Seeing a live action version of Harley Quinn is so exciting and the fact that it's going to be Margo Robbie is great, being an incredibly talented actress with a lot "of talent". She'll be delightful. What most people are aware of is that the Joker in this version will be Jared Leto and despite having only seen about five seconds of him in action, I feel confident. My only real let down with this film is that due to the 12 rating, they won't be able to give the story the maturity it deserves. I'm still excited though. I mean, it can't be that bad, right?

2. Anomalisa

Long time readers of the blog know of my love for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind which instantly explains Anomalisa being on the list. It's written and directed by Charlie Kaufman who wrote Eternal Sunshine and he's an incredibly talented writer, even if his stories can end up with a slightly quirky feel. Call it offbeat though and we have no problem. Back to the film, Anomalisa is (going off the vague but wonderful trailer) the story of a celebrity who is feeling lost with his life and ends up finding love in a hotel. The most offbeat thing about this all is that there is not a single human in the film; it's all stop motion animation and that is so exciting. Not only are we getting a heartwarming story, we're being told it in a whole new way and that makes me feel so happy. I am so incredibly excited to see this film that it almost seems impossible that anything could be more anticipated. Well, there's one film...

1. Deadpool

Yeah, this one should be obvious. I've been praising every step that this film has made so far, from it's R rating, to the commitment of Ryan Reynolds to those hysterical trailers. We've had two so far, one a few months back and one as a Christmas gift last week and I can certainly say that they are two of the best trailers I've seen in a good long while. It even formed the basis for an article I wrote in the school's paper because I'm that goddamn excited for it. I don't claim to be an expert on Deadpool but I've read a fair few of his comics and they're great. If even a portion of that fun, excitement and dedication to balls out action is carried across, this'll be an enjoyable cinema experience. But if it reaches the heights it is promising, we've got a real game changer that'll revolutionise the industrie's attitude towards superhero films and give us the chance for the darker comics we love being recreated for the big screen. Now that is exciting.
