Review- Bad Neighbours

Well, tomorrow is April Fools Day and while I did just want to make a prank post, I decided not to cheapen the blog with that. Instead, a review of a comedy film from last year that I missed. And that film is Bad Neighbours. Is it good? Is it bad? Will Seth Rogen play a character who isn't just Seth Rogen? A firm no to that last one but it's time to find out about the other two.

Bad Neighbours is the story of Seth Rogen (played here by Seth Rogen) and an ever attractive Rose Byrne who move into a lovely neighbourhood. They have a baby and they just want to settle down and have a peaceful life, watching TV and doing whatever else normal parents are meant to do. Unfortunately, a frat house moves in next door, chaired by Zac Efron. It all starts fine but soon Seth Rogen takes it a step too far and we enter a prank war. Yeah, that's about as deep as the story gets. Seriously. It's a Seth Rogen film, it's not going to do anything big like, oh I don't know, take down a global giant in the film indus... Oh yeah.

Anyway, like I said, it's a Seth Rogen comedy. What this means is that it's funny. Hell, in this case, it's extremely funny. I mean, incredibly so. If not for 22 Jump Street and maybe Guardians of the Galaxy, this would be the funniest film of last year. Even with those films, this film still deserves to be held up as one of the funniest films of last year. But it's Seth Rogen. It's not exactly intelligent humour. There is literally a scene where Seth Rogen and Zac Efron slap each other in the face with dildos. Yeah. It's stoner comedy. So if dicks, weed and complete obscenity aren't your kind of thing, get out quickly.

Now, it does occasionally feel a bit sloppy. The pacing isn't entirely solid all the way through. This leads to some moments of extreme hilarity and then long moments where the humour is just not all there. It also gives away some of it's best moments in the trailer. Well, the moments that aren't full of swearing, penises or gratuitous weed smoking. It also loses momentum as it enters the third act, having used most of it's truly excellent jokes up earlier. It's still funny, it's just not quite as laugh out loud funny as it was earlier.

But really, you should watch Bad Neighbours. No, it isn't subtle and neither is it polite in it's handling of anything. It's a gross movie. It's stupid. But it's meant to be. This is a call back to the glory days of frat house movies. And while it never quite reaches the heights of it's idol Animal House, it's a great film that you can absolutely enjoy if you would just turn your brain off for an hour and a half. That's why I give Bad Neighbours a
