Opinion Piece- Just bring on 2017 already

So, we're in Autumn now, September has basically gone and one of the most disappointing Summers in recent memory has walked out on us, even if it's disgusting scent still lingers. Really, what this has left me saying is that this year has little else left to offer us and we should just move on to 2017 early, as I'll explain with three handy paragraphs.

As I briefly mentioned in the opening, this year has been pretty lackluster for films. The Summer box office season has brought some films that disappointed critically and commercially. Some films, like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 managed to do both and be generally awful. Plus, the only films major studios wanted to put out were prequels, sequels or reboots and no one wanted a good 80% of them. Even the smaller films haven't been perfect. There have been great films like 10 Cloverfield Lane, The Nice Guys and the utterly wonderful The Nice Guys but by this time last year, there were far more great films. And really, when a year brought you Suicide Squad and the rest of the brave new world of the DC Cinematic Universe, you want it to be over real quick.

Another reason that this year can just get lost is that next year looks genuinely spectacular. For a start, we get the barrage of Oscar films at the start of the year and that means the year is starting off with Damien Chazelle's new film La La Land, which looks beautiful. Indie films aside, there's plenty to be excited about. If you're a fan of The Rock, you're covered with three films starring him, being Baywatch, Fast 8 and Jumanji. If you're a fan of Marvel, you've got Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Thor: Ragnarok and Spiderman: Homecoming. Even if you're a fan of bad films, you've got Fist Fight (Ice Cube vs Charlie from Always Sunny in Philadelphia), Monster Trucks (a film that is exactly what it sounds like) and Power Rangers (which I'm still convinced will be good). It's a good year to like films or even to like trash. Plus, Star Wars Episode 8 which will definitely cure cancer and be the new Citizen Kane.

It would be closed minded of me to ignore the fact that there are still good films coming out this year, it's really just that there isn't much left to rival next year. There's a new Dennis Vilneuve film (the guy who made Prisoners and Sicario), Doctor Strange will prove that Marvel genuinely can't do wrong and the new series of Black Mirror is just fantastic news for pessimists everywhere. There is also of course Rogue One, the new "Star Wars but not the Star Wars" film which should be at least good and Disney, who have been on a killer winning streak recently, have a new film with The Rock so I will see that at least twice. I do, however, refuse to get excited for Fantastic Beasts and where to find them as I have a personal vendetta against Harry Potter. I'll go see it and it'll probably be okay but I am not going to enjoy liking it. Americans have Oscar films to look forward to at the end of the year but due to January, we don't even have that, even if Tom Ford's (A Single Man director) new film has escaped that trap. There's just not enough left this year to outweigh the weight of expectations for next year.

In all honesty, I'm quite happy with some of the films yet to be released this year. I think there's still jewels to discover out there but I want to see the films of next year so badly. It's been a disappointing year and while there will certainly be disappointments next year, I think there's also plenty of amazing films waiting to be watched. And I am going to watch the shit out of all of them
