Review- The Room

Happy Halloween! Continuing my tradition of reviewing terrifyingly bad movies, I am reviewing what I genuinely consider to be the worst movie ever made: Tommy Wiseau's disaster-piece, The Room.

First off, yes, that's genuinely the poster. It's the face of writer, director, producer and star Tommy Wiseau doing the scariest duck face you'll ever see. He's a totally crazy mad man and to find out more, I really do recommend reading the book The Disaster Artist. It's a hilarious and surprisingly emotional book that looks into co-star Greg Sestero's meeting of Tommy and also the making of The Room. It's fascinating and has made me see the film in a totally different way. But even with that, it's absolutely the worst film I've ever seen.

The plot revolves around... The plot. Damn. Err, I'm pretty sure there's something here. Umm... I'll google it. Right, apparently it's about a dude named Johnny who has a fiance named Lisa. They're madly in love except Lisa doesn't love Johnny anymore. She loves his best friend Mark. So cues a series of uncomfortable love making scenes and disconnected moments that have nothing to do with each other, like a trip to a florists in which both actors talk as if they're not talking to another actor. It's a hot stinking mess but man, "What a story Mark!" (genuine quote). The script writing is flat out embarrassing but it creates such a series of surreal moments that I can't help but love it.

The acting is also something to be embarrassed by. The lead performance is Tommy Wiseau in a performance that Hayden Christiansen would describe as pretty crap. He takes every scene like he's never seen it before, never seen another human before or ever actually said a word, despite the fact that he wrote it. Fun fact, his acting was so awful, it took him a whole day to film the famous "Oh hi Mark" scene. For those unaware, that scene is about 10 seconds long, max. He also has two (technically one but gimme a sec) of the most uncomfortable sex scenes ever put to scene, including tasteful nip slips and Tommy's butt on screen for 5 seconds. Except that the scene was so uncomfortable for the actress playing Lisa that she refused to do another one. Hence, we have two near identical scenes that are just as uncomfortable. The other actors put in pathetic performances but given on set conditions and the script, they genuinely did the best job possible.

There's so much about this film that I've not mentioned. The green screen, the production value, the best line of the whole film ("You're tearing me apart Lisa!!!"). It's cinema's biggest train wreck but we are compelled to watch. And keep watching. We can never stop watching The Room because while it is without a shadow of a doubt the worst film I've ever seen, it's also fantastic. It's a comedy with no equal and I genuinely love it. But I can't sugar coat the fact that The Room certainly gets a
